Join us for a discussion with Shyamala Alagendra, and learn how about her work at the International Criminal Court. Shyamala will speak about her experiences and views on whether justice has been wholly pursued and served - in the context of the work of internationalized courts. In presenting her views she will consider the question through the prism of the impact of international criminal justice on victims and witnesses.

Dato’ Shyamala Alagendra is a Malaysian lawyer and has practiced domestically and before several international and hybrid courts since April 1998. She has been elected to serve as a member of the International Criminal Court Bar Association (ICCBA) Executive and Victims Committee.

She is presently Counsel at the International Criminal Court (ICC) for Saif Al Islam Gadafi of Libya and before that for both Ambassador Muthaura and Deputy President William Ruto of Kenya. She also currently represents victims of colonial abuse in Kenya, victims of sexual abuse by foreign clergy in Sierra Leone and victims of human rights violations committed by regional troops during the conflict in Sierra Leone. She has also done cases at the Special Tribunal for Lebanon (STL) and the EULEX Courts in Kosovo.  In all her cases, in addition to her role as counsel, Shyamala also acts as the investigations coordinator.

Between 2001 to 2011, Shyamala served as a Prosecution Trial Lawyer at the ICC in all the Darfur cases including the case against President Omar Al Bashir of Sudan, at the Special Court for Sierra Leone (SCSL) in the AFRC, RUF and Charles Taylor trials and at the Special Panel for Serious Crimes in Timor Leste (SPSC).
