Africa Table - My Marriage to Science: An Educator Discusses her Human Rights Pedagogy and Practice

Speaker: Chiseche Salome Mibenge, Director for Community Engaged Learning, Haas Center for Public Service and the Office of the Vice Provost for Undergraduate Education

Dr. Mibenge received her PhD in International Human Rights Law from Utrecht University’s School of Law. She is the author of Sex and International Tribunals: The Erasure of Gender from the War Narrative (Penn Press, 2013). She has conducted fieldwork in Rwanda and Sierra Leone, clerked at the UN International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia and served as a gender consultant with the UN in Eastern Congo. She has been a visiting scholar at various research institutions, including the University of Bradford’s Division of Peacekeeping, American University’s WCL Center for Human Rights and Humanitarian Law and National University of Rwanda’s Center for Conflict Management. Chiseche is the co-editor with Irene Hadiprayitno (Leiden University) of a book series Human Rights Interventions launched with Palgrave MacMillan in 2017. She is also a creative nonfiction writer and an awardee of the Bronx Council on the Arts (BRIO), and the Columbia Journal Winter Contest Winner for her story The Protected Party (Spring 2017).

As a Director of Community Engaged Learning at the Haas Center for Public Service, Chiseche supports the development of community engaged and rights based approaches to learning and research. Immediately prior to Stanford, she was an assistant professor of Political Science at the City University of New York where she taught human rights and international law courses to graduate and undergraduate students. She volunteered as a rape crisis counselor and advocate for survivors in emergency departments under the North Central Bronx Hospital Sexual Assault Treatment Program. Chiseche is an eternal student, and is enrolled in San Francisco Sex Information’s sex educator training program.
