Chitja Twala is a Senior Lecturer in the Department of History at the University of the Free State (UFS). He received his PhD in 2010 from UFS. Twala is currently collaborating with Prof. Peter Limb (Michigan State University in the USA) on a book project on the history of the ANC in the Free State from 1912 to 2012. His contribution into historical knowledge includes extensive usage of archival research. Twala has a substantial publication record on the history of the liberation movements with special reference to the ANC.

He is the author of six chapters in The Road to Democracy in South Africa: Vol. 4 (1970-1980) and the Road to Democracy in South Africa: Vol. 6 (1990-1996) published in 2010 and 2013 respectively. In some of the chapters he collaborated with the likes of the Prof Leo Barnard (UFS) and Prof Jeremy Seekings (University of Cape Town). He has 52 peer reviewed articles published in local and international journals. He is an editorial board member of the Journal for Contemporary History and Yesterday and Today. Twala is currently serving as the chairperson of the Free State Provincial Heritage Resources Authority (FSPHRA), board member of the South African Heritage Resources Agency (SAHRA) and board member of the Boer Republic Museum in Bloemfontein.
