Paloma Ronis von Helms

Paloma Ronis von Helms (she/her) is an IR major specializing in International Security and Latin American & Iberian Studies. She spoke with us about her favorite classes, study abroad experience, extra-curriculars, and career goals!

What are your primary academic/research interests?

My primary academic/research interests are refugee studies, global displacement, and immigration policy.

What is your favorite IR class so far?

So far, my favorite IR-related class was Human Rights 108 with Vivian Brates on Migration, Asylum, and Human Rights at the Border. It was so well-taught and featured a ton of amazing guest speakers, as well as a really cool volunteer component. I also took the Modern Battle seminar with Dr. Vardi last winter and learned so much about military strategy and international conflict.

Can you tell us a bit about a study abroad experience you've had?

I studied abroad in Madrid, Spain this past Spring, and it has by far been the highlight of my Stanford experience. I really improved my Spanish and got to learn all about the culture, history, and politics of Spain, but my favorite part was getting to intern at an NGO dedicated to eradicating violence against women. Everyone in the cohort was so friendly and the program staff created the most welcoming learning environment. I would definitely recommend the program to anyone considering! :)

Are there any extra- or co-curricular Stanford activities or student groups you would recommend for IR majors?

I've been in SWIP for the last three years on campus, and I'm currently serving as the Financial Officer. SWIP has been such a great way for me to find community and meet other students interested in policy/law/government studies, and I've truly found some of my closest friends through the club. I would definitely recommend for anyone looking to connect with other social science majors, and everyone is welcome at our events!

What are your future career goals?

In the future, I would love to work on international policy research in D.C., whether for the government or for an NGO. I am also planning on attending law school after Stanford.
