Sarah Myers

Sarah Myers is a senior majoring in IR with specializations in East & South Asia and International Security. She spoke with us about her experience studying IR and studying abroad at Stanford.

What has been the most fulfilling part of studying IR at Stanford?

For me, the most fulfilling part of studying IR has probably been studying the history and culture of places outside the US.

How your academic interests in IR, physics, German, and Mandarin have connected to your path as a Fulbright scholar?

My interests in IR, German, and Mandarin connected well for the Fulbright, since I'll be in Germany studying EU-China relations. Physics won't be super relevant to this project, but I did the minor more for my own interest, and it was a wonderful learning experience.

What advice would you give students interested in IR?

IR is a great major because it gives you analytical tools which will be useful for any career you pursue, and it allows a lot of flexibility in choosing classes. I do recommend making a plan in your freshman or sophomore year, because fitting together two years of language classes, a quarter abroad, and a thesis program can be complicated: For instance, I am in the CDDRL thesis program and we had a seminar in spring quarter of junior year, when many people might plan to study abroad.
