Lila Batcheller

Lila Batcheller is a senior majoring in International Relations with specializations in International Security and International History and Culture. Lila spoke with us about her research interests, favorite IR classes, internship experience, and what she enjoys outside of the classroom. 

What are your primary research interests?

My research interests in IR are focused on two areas: civil-military relations and the role of technology in American foreign policy. I’m writing my honors thesis through the CDDRL program on why retired flag generals in the U.S. started endorsing presidential candidates, and most of my courses have focused on technology, trade, and American foreign policy. 

What is your favorite IR class so far and why?

My favorite IR class so far has been War and Peace in American Foreign Policy with Professor Ken Schultz. It was a great overview of how foreign policy decisions get made, and what, at all, can constrain an executive. I especially enjoyed the real-world, relevant essay prompts. A close second would be What is Security? with Professor Steve Stedman. I took his seminar during my sophomore year, and it sparked an interest in me to focus on International Security as one of my IR concentrations. He is also now my thesis advisor. 

Can you tell us a bit about a recent internship/study abroad experience?

A recent internship experience that I enjoyed was a foreign policy and technology legislative internship in Senator Jeff Merkley’s office. Getting a glimpse into the legislative process was informative, and the Stanford in Washington program is one of the best opportunities available to students interested in public service. Senator Merkley is a Stanford IR grad from the class of 1979, so getting to learn about his career progression and how he views technology and trade policy was really valuable.

Any hobbies or outside interests?

I really enjoy anything outside; running, hiking and skiing come to mind, but I’m trying to be more adventurous and take advantage of the beautiful Northern California nature while at Stanford. I’ve been trying to read more books outside of those focused on policy, and so far that’s led me to reading more about American history. I also enjoy language learning. I don’t know if I would call the Portuguese classes I’ve taken a hobby, but I enjoy practicing the language and learning about Brazilian history.
