SGS Summer Film Festival: Travellers

The Hamid and Christina Moghadam Program in Iranian Studies invites you to watch Travellers from home at a time that works for your schedule, then join us on Zoom for a post-screening discussion with Iranian Studies director Dr. Abbas Milani. Please RSVP to receive the Zoom information. The film will be made available August 6-9 and the link will be emailed to registrants ahead of time. Film is in Persian with English subtitles. About the film:
Directed by Bahram Beyzaie (Iran, 1992).
Mahtab Maarefi travels to Tehran for her sister’s wedding and brings an auspicious mirror to the ceremony. She and her family are killed in a road accident. The wedding becomes a funeral, but the grandmother does not believe in the death of the travellers.
Discussant Abbas Milani is the Director of the Hamid and Christina Moghadam Program in Iranian Studies at Stanford University and a research fellow and co-director of the Iran Democracy Project at the Hoover Institution.
Director Bahram Beyzaie is an award-winning Iranian filmmaker, theater director, playwright, educator, and scholar of the history of Iranian theater. He was one of the leaders of the generation of filmmakers known as the Iranian New Wave, beginning in the late 1960s, and helped revitalize Iran's performing arts by incorporating Indo-Iranian mythology and Iranian conventional performing arts with modern theater and cinema. Over the past 50 years, Beyzaie has written numerous papers and published more than 70 books, monographs, plays, and screenplays. He has directed 14 staged plays, ten feature films, and four short films. Since Beyzaie's arrival at Stanford University in 2010 as the Bita Daryabari Lecturer of Persian Studies, he has staged several plays and held workshops on Iranian mythology and cinema. He currently teaches courses on Iranian theater and cinema at Stanford.
Lead actress Mojdeh Shamsaie studied theater at the College of Arts and Architecture in Tehran. She has been involved in numerous film productions as an actor, makeup artist, set and costume designer, assistant director, and production manager. She has acted in several films by Bahram Beyzaie and is recipient of the Crystal Simorgh Fajr Film Festival award for acting and makeup. Mojdeh has also acted in numerous theatrical productions including Bahram Beyzaie's "Jana & Baladoor," "Arash," "One Thousand and First night," "Ardaviraf's Report," "Tarabnameh," and "Crossroads."
