Focusing upon rural youth, this project seeks to explore the relationship between educational and economic disadvantage and the demands for technical and ‘soft skills’ in a globalised and rapidly transforming jobs market. Specifically, the project investigates the manner in which the government’s ‘Skills Development Programme’ is unfolding at the ground level. He has been in conversation regarding the project with the Department of Skills Development at the Ministry of Rural Development (MoRD), as well as private players, such as the Futures Group (that owns the Big Bazaar chain of department stores) that have been contracted by the MoRD and the National Skills Development Council (NSDC) for skills development. The project explores discourses of ‘skill’ and ‘competence’ that as they circulate in villages, government departments, management schools and corporate offices; it seeks to locate these discourses within broader conversations (and projects) regarding the making of new subjectivities through, and for, new kinds of work.
