The Paradox of Unpopular Corruption and Popular Corrupt Politicians with Carlos Pereira, Tinker Visiting Professor
This presentation explores why corrupt politicians get reelected, paying particular attention to voter information on incumbent misconduct, incumbent provision of public good, and ideological congruence between voters and corrupt politicians. It is discussed and identified evidence for two complementary psychological mechanisms: a cognitive cost-benefit tradeoff and a change in perception.
